The FY10 Action Plan is the final Action Plan that is a part of the Wilmington Memorial Library Long Range Plan FY06-FY10. The development of the FY11-FY15 Long Range Plan is a part of the FY10 Action Plan.
Goal 1: Residents will have a modern library facility that is welcoming and accessible to all citizens.
- Add customized signage throughout the library by September 2009.
- Provide two self-check out stations by January 2010.
- Ask Public Buildings Department to begin the replacement of library windows beginning July 2009.
- Begin strategic planning process for next five year long range plan in July 2009. Complete FY11-FY15 Long Range Plan. Complete by November 2009.
Goal 2: Residents will be made aware of the services and resources that the library provides to assist them in their personal lives, at work or in school.
- Earmark additional funds to increase the number of custom designed library bookmarks to promote programs and services.
- Develop a promotional plan to get parents of kindergarten students to visit the library prior to the start of school in September 2009.
- Work with the local newspaper to do at least four feature articles, one per season.
- Develop a method to identify and “capture” the testimonial/success stories to use in press releases and promotional materials by August, 2009.
- Evaluate library web site for usability and make improvements by November, 2009.
- Recruit a volunteer to videotape library programs regularly for local cable TV.
- Identify two talking points about library services by September 2009 and train staff to become marketers and promote these services by December 2009.
Goal 3: Library users will have access to current information technology.
Note: See attached Technology Plan for FY09-FY11 for FY10 Action Items.
- Seek funding from the Friends of the Library Annual Appeal 2009 for four laptop computers for loaning to patrons in house and for expanding computer classes.
Goal 4: The library will provide children of all ages with an array of materials and a variety of programs that foster a love of reading and intellectual inquiry.
- Seek funding from the Friends of the Library for circulating computer software, new puppets, grab and go book kit with bags, puzzles, games and interactive educational toys by September 2009. Add to collection and promote by November 2009.
- Seek funding from the Friends of the Library for a new Children’s Reference Desk by July 2009.
- Expand programs and services for school age children.
- Present three additional special events for children ages 8-11 by June 2010.
- Weed and re-catalog the paperback collections—file with hard covers; create two collections, “Chapter Books” and intermediate novels by December 2009
- Create two reader’s advisory annotated booklists for children by June 2010.
- Develop a promotional plan to get parents of kindergarten students to visit the library prior to the start of school in September 2009.
- Present at least two programs on parenting issues by June 2010. Create display and related annotated booklist.
Goal 5: Teens will view the library as a welcoming place that supports their special interests and developmental needs and invigorates their interest in reading for pleasure.
- Present at least one program a month based on input from the Tween and Teen Advisory Group (TAG).
- Coordinate with middle and high school teachers for monthly science programs (September 2009-June 2010)
- Conduct survey of teens to get feedback on services and resources offered by the Teen Zone by September 2009.
- With help of the TAG, determine which suggestions are worth following up, and implement changes in response to this feedback (October 2009-June 2010)
- Maintain adequate shelf space through weeding and purchasing of books and AV materials.
- Complete obligations of LSTA “Serving Teens & Tweens” grant by September 2009
- Finalize annual reporting paperwork for LSTA “Serving Teens & Tweens” grant (September-October 2009)
- Seek funding from the Friends of the Library for a new Teen Reference Desk by July 2009.
Goal 6: Residents will have access to a collection of current and popular materials and to a variety of programs that enhance leisure time, stimulate thought and expand knowledge.
- Improve access to non-fiction collection with better browsing and merchandising techniques.
- Identify non-fiction “neighborhoods,” identify books that belong in respective neighborhoods, recatalog as necessary. Complete the implementation by September 2009.
- Continue expansion of readers’ advisory services.
- Implement a “book of the week” blog by October 2009.
- Develop and implement an “up and coming” publication email service by November 2009.
- Expand on the adult summer reading program for June-August 2009.
- Kick-off the event with a Read for Fines program.
- Investigate ways to better serve the male demographic.
- Conduct a focus group with local male residents by December 2009.
- Research the practices of other libraries by January 2009.
- Implement at least one outcome by April 2010.
Goal 7: Residents will view the library as a community hub and a primary source of local information
- Migrate local newspaper index to Microsoft Access, or a similar database by January 2010. Investigate ways to make it available online.
- Investigate options for replacement of local newspaper on microfilm.
- Continue development of the local history collection.
- Develop up-to-date research guides for the collection by March 2010.
- Investigate preservation options and pricing for the map collection by April 2010.
- Host at least one event highlighting the collection by May 2010.
- Begin building a local historical/points of interest online map of Wilmington using Google’s My Map feature by June 2010.
Goal 8: Library staff will be able to meet the changing and varied library service needs of residents.
- Identify two talking points about library services by September 2009 and train staff to become marketers and promote these services by December 2009.
- Schedule one-on-one technology training sessions in summer 2009 to be taught by Head of Technical Services.
- Invite a regional expert to talk about emerging technologies at one of the quarterly staff meetings in 2009.
- Library Director and /or Assistant Library Director will schedule an annual meeting with each employee to discuss library/departmental goals beginning July 2009.
- Review and revise as necessary the following library policies: Bicentennial Room Policy, Exhibit/Bulletin Board Policy, Fundraising Policy and Collection Development Policy.
- Investigate grant opportunities and apply for at least one grant by June 2010.
- Review and update Disaster Plan by June 2010.
