APPENDIX D: FY06 Action Plan

Goal 1 Residents will have modern library facility that is welcoming and accessible to all citizens
 
  • Organize a fundraising committee by July, 2005.
  • Develop "Frequently Asked Questions" about the building project and post on the library web site.
  • Develop a library brochure that highlights features of new library proposal.
  • Develop a plan for insuring that the collection and shelves are cleaned regularly, July 2005.
  • Request that available custodial hours be increased by July, 2005.
  • Create a directional map of the library to be posted at all entrances.
  • Determine costs for Sunday hours' operation.
Goal 2 Residents will be made aware of the services and resources that the library provides to assist them in their personal lives, at work or in school.
 
  • Gather information on how to develop a marketing plan and prepare cost analysis by November, 2006.
  • Add answering machine to record messages when library is closed and investigate enhanced features.
  • Work with Assistant Superintendent of Schools to establish new teacher orientation at the library beginning September 2005.
  • Test usability of website with volunteers by August 2005.
  • Upgrade Library website by August 2006. Include funding for web site designer in FY07 budget.
Goal 3 Add another Internet PC workstation for public use in the
Children's Room by January, 2006.
 
  • Work with architect and technology consultant to develop state of the art technology in new library
  • Install wireless computer access on the first floor of the library to expand Internet use by the January, 2006.

Goal 4 The library will provide children of all ages with an array of materials and a variety of programs that foster a love of reading and intellectual inquiry.
 
  • Promote the new program for parents and babies.
  • Re-label picture books with larger type and first and last name of the author after picture books are weeded.
  • Complete the weed of the children's nonfiction collection by June 2006.
  • Add attractive directional signage in the children?s room by August 2006.
  • celebration of Wilmington's 275th Anniversary during September, 2005.
Goal 5 Teens will view the library as a welcoming place that supports their special interests and developmental needs and invigorates their interest in reading for pleasure.
 
  • Work with architect to design the teen area in new library.

  • Improve and expand Teen Web Page on library's website to include interactive features by December, 2005.
  • Request Friends funding for Karaoke machine for Teen Programs July 2006. Continue to involve key teachers at the high school and middle school in library programs for teens.
  • Develop criteria to evaluate programs to insure optimum utilization of staff time by July 2006.
Goal 6 Residents will have access to a collection of current and popular materials and to a variety of programs that enhance leisure time, stimulate thought and expand knowledge.
 
  • Check the collection against the Public Library Catalog and the Fiction Catalog annually beginning in January, 2006.
  • Review ordering procedures to insure that new popular materials are ordered and processed as quickly as possible by August, 2006.
  • Book well known author to present a program in the winter, 2006.
  • Investigate the feasibility of providing an Art Film series in winter 2006.
  • Present programs on the following topics: Patriot Act, Home Computer Maintenance, Shopping Online, Digital Photography, Local History and Cultural Diversity.
Goal 7 Residents will view the library as a community hub and a primary source of local informationion.
 
  • Work with architect to design user friendly public spaces.
  • Complete the weeding and cataloging of the local history collection by August, 2005.
  • Investigate the cost and feasibility of digitizing the photographs in the local history collection.
  • In conjunction with the 275th Anniversary Celebration, develop handouts to promote the Wilmington Collection.
Goal 8 Library staff will be able to meet the changing and varied library service needs of residents.
 
  • Work with architect to provide efficient and ergonomic staff work spaces..
  • Request funding for five senior librarians to attend the PLA Conference in Boston in March 2006.
  • Present staff development workshop on managing change in May, 2006.
  • Devise a strategy to have more regular staff meetings by September, 2005.
  • Utilize NMRLS library consultants to assist Adult Reference/Circulation Department to do departmental planning in May 2007.
