April Book Buddies - Apply NOW to Volunteer!

Are you a teen who needs volunteer hours? Apply to participate in our great Book Buddies Program for April!

The Book Buddies program is an opportunity for teens in grades 9-12 to earn community service hours by interacting with a young child. During the course of four weeks, you will be paired with a child for a one-hour session once a week. Together you will read, share a snack, and do a fun craft!

There is a mandatory training session followed by four sessions - every Saturday morning in April.

For more information and to apply, please visit Teen Volunteers - Book Buddies April 2014.

I'm excited to announce that the 'Walking Dead' graphic novels have joined the Teen Zone's Graphic Novel section (under Teen Graphic Walking Dead). If you are a fan of the hit AMC zombie show, you should definitely check out the graphic novels by Robert Kickman. They add new depth to the characters, there are plot differences, and every volume is action-packed!

Highly recommended, but mostly for ages 14+ due to the graphic/violent content associated with all things zombie-related.

Teen Zone Updates - 2014
Posted by Alison Schwartz on Wed, 01/22/2014 - 11:03am

As I reach my sixth month as your Teen Librarian at Wilmington Memorial Library, I'm proud to say I've made a lot of positive changes to your Teen Zone!

What's new?

- Comfy lime green saucer chairs for you to lounge in while enjoying a book or magazine
- Awesome comic book wall decals, with action words like 'Kaboom' and 'Fwoooosh' that liven up the area
- A special section for 'Series' books - like "Pretty Little Liars" and "Clique"-  makes them much easier to find
- New tables and chairs - perfect for studying or hanging out
- A laptop bar against the wall, which gives you more space to move around

Coming very soon:

- A College and Careers section just for teens!
- Tons more crafts and DIY!
- Boredom-busting activities for Spring Break in April - including a Project Runway competition and Video Game Tournament!
- More Community Service opportunities!
- New books, new board games, and new video games!

I'm looking forward to meeting more Wilmington teens and adding more fun events to keep you coming back to the Teen Zone again and again. Come in sometime soon to say hi!

- Alison (Your Teen Librarian)

In your opinion, what were some of the best books of 2013? You can vote now on which titles you feel should be in the YALSA Top Ten list, along with other teen readers across the country. Voting is open now through October 22nd. (My pick is Tilt by Ellen Hopkins - gritty realistic fiction at its finest.)

Did you know? There is now an iPad available just for teens to borrow for up to the two hours in the Teen Zone. It's loaded with the hottest games!

Newsflash! There is now a True Stories section in Teen Non-fiction - for those of you who enjoy a hearty serving of reality. We have books about ghastly crimes, haunted happenings, tales of survival, and even a book about fairies (true story?!). Look above the Biographies or ask your friendly librarian for assistance (or recommendations!)
