    Congratulations to the winners of the Annual Poetry Contest 2014! The theme this year was "reading." Over 200 entries were submitted. Thank you to our judges: Kendra Amaral, Assistant Town Manager, Jean Chang, Chairman of the Wilmington Arts Council and Alison Schwartz, Teen Services Librarian. Winners and those who received an Honorable Mention are invited to Poetry Night on April 29 at 7 pm to read their poems and receive awards and certificates.  For names of winners and poems click here.

    To celebrate the Week of the Young Child, the library is hosting an art show displaying the work of babies, toddlers, and preschoolers who attend day care and preschools in Wilmington.  Stop by the library to view their wonderful creations.  The display will continue through Saturday, April 19.

    The library is in the middle of a strategic planning process to map our course for the next 5 years. In order to create a plan that best serves Wilmington, it is important to hear from residents.  Please complete the library's survey. It should only take 5 to 10 minutes You are also invited to attend the next Community Forum on Tuesday, April 29, 1 pm.  A facilitator will lead the forum. Light refreshments will be served. Please register if you plan to attend the Community Forum.

    The April Book Buddies Program is still accepting applicants from Teen Volunteers (

    The time for the sessions in April has also been switched to Fridays at 3:45pm until 4:45pm. This change has been made to better accomodate the schedules of both volunteers and the kids interested in participating. 

    Any teen volunteers or children that are interested in the Book Buddies program that are only available on Saturday mornings may still apply. Please specify if this is the case.

    Welcome to our new Technology Librarian Brad McKenna.  Brad brings his technology experience from the private sector and will receive his Masters Degree in Library Science from Simmons College in May 2014.

    Calling all Friends! You are invited to the Friends Annual Meeting on Thursday, March 21 at 7 pm.  All attendees will receive a free raffle ticket with a chance to win a Downton Abbey gift basket.  New members are welcome to join at the door. The event includes a book talk by Wilmington's reader extraordinaire Eileen MacDougall and a fun book game plus refreshments and a chance to socialize with other library advocates.

      In April, the Children's and Teen Departments will be partnering again to bring you Book Buddies! Children who are ages 4+ will be paired with a teen volunteer. With his or her teen Book Buddy, your child can practice reading or be read to, do a fun craft, and share a snack!

    When: Every Saturday morning in April (April 5, 12, 19, 26) at 10am

    Are you a teen who needs volunteer hours? Apply to participate in our great Book Buddies Program for April!

    The Book Buddies program is an opportunity for teens in grades 9-12 to earn community service hours by interacting with a young child. During the course of four weeks, you will be paired with a child for a one-hour session once a week. Together you will read, share a snack, and do a fun craft!

    There is a mandatory training session followed by four sessions - every Saturday morning in April.

    The Friends of the Library Book Store Next Door resumes Wednesday hours on Wednesday, March 5. The store is open 10 am to 4 pm on Wednesdays and on Saturdays. Shop for gently used books at bargain prices!
