E-audiobook help

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start?

  • Verify that your device is a supported audio device. Download and install Overdrive Media Console on your computer. Install the Windows Media Player security update. Browse for an audiobook in the Overdrive catalog.
  • After checking out an e-audiobook, click Download and Save the file (do not click “open”). Then, open Overdrive Media Console, click “File” then “Open”, and find and open the file you just downloaded. You will then be prompted to download the full audiobook. Then, you can listen to the audiobook, transfer it to a compatible device, or burn it to a CD.

What can I download?

  • Patrons may check out up to (5) electronic books or electronic audiobooks at once. E-books and e-audiobooks will expire after 7, 14, or 21 days, depending on your preference at checkout.
  • Massachusetts residents may also register for a Boston Public Library e-card which allows access to more Overdrive titles.

Should I download an "MP3" or a "WMA"?

  • Check the supported audio device list to see if your device supports MP3 files, WMA files, or both. Make sure you check out the appropriate type of audiobook for your device. Some e-audiobooks are only available in WMA or MP3 format, although most are available in both formats.

Windows Media Player updates

  • If you see an error message stating “Windows Media Player requires a security upgrade”, open Overdrive Media Console and click “Tools” then “Windows Media Player Security Upgrade”. If this link does not work, open Internet Explorer and go to http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/Indivsite and click “Upgrade”.

Can I place holds?

  • Yes. Holds can be placed on e-books and e-audiobooks using Overdrive's "My Digital Account". Please note that this catalog is separate from the library catalog, so notification preferences may be different.
