Teen Zone

Teen Visual Literacy Series

Everywhere you look, you're surrounded by images: advertisements, street signs, even product logos. What do all these images mean? Can pictures tell stories or convey information that words can't? What are all the images really saying? And how much do you really know about it? Be a part of our Visual Literacy program series this spring and find answers to all these questions and more!

Selling the Teen Zone: Teen-Created Advertising Competition
Submission deadline Friday, May 22
How would you advertise the Teen Zone? Now’s your chance to show off your ideas!  Design print ads or film your own commercials—or both!—and submit them by Friday, May 22, to be entered into the competition.  Details on how to submit your work can be found here.  Winning print ads and video spots will be used to advertise the library and Teen Zone in the local newspapers and on WCTV.

Words & Pictures (for teens)
Thursday, April 23   3:30 pm
How do pictures tell stories?  Can you “read” a picture the same way you can written words?  We’ll be looking at sequential art, comics, and storyboarding in this hands-on visual literacy workshop.

Deconstructing Advertising (for teens)
Thursday, April 30   3:30 pm
Whether you’re channel-surfing or flipping through a magazine, you’re bombarded with advertising.  But what’s really being sold, and how are companies selling it directly to you?  We’ll look at a variety of print and TV ads and talk about the messages they’re sending.

Teen-Created Advertising: Last-Minute Feedback Session
Wednesday, May 13   3-4:30
The deadline for the Creative Advertising competition is a week away!  Bring your plans, your prototypes, or even your mostly-finished projects to get feedback from other teens, and give your feedback to fellow creators.

Marketing Jeopardy (for teens)
Wednesday, May 20   7-8:30 pm
How much do you know about advertising? Can you recognize logos, slogans, or jingles from the past and present, or identify which companies own other ones?  Can you spot a product placement in a TV show or movie? Compete against other teens to show off how much you recognize about popular culture!

Screening Night: Teen-Created Advertising
Thursday, May 28   7-8:30 pm
After all your hard work over the past two months, it’s time to show it off!  We’ll be displaying the print ads as well as screening the video commercials that you’ve made to advertise the Teen Zone.  Winners will be chosen by audience vote, so bring your friends and family to root for your favorites!

To register for programs in this series, check the library’s Calendar of Events or call the Teen Zone at 978-694-2098.

This program series is made possible by a federal grant from the Library Services and Technology Act through the Institute of Museum and Library Services and is administered by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
